They wouldn’t have boyfriends or girlfriends.
Before they were together, they didn’t have any official boyfriends or girlfriends. Occasionally there would be a date, but never a relationship. They always worried about making each other jealous, and in the end, they really didn’t want to be with anyone else.
Mm. This is a tricky question.
For one, shipping AkuRiku is both a blessing and curse. A blessing because they are perfect. A curse because no one else ships it with me.
A big reason I ship them is because Riku is my favorite character and Axel is my favorite character. And I have this habit of shipping my favorites together because that way they are perfect while being perfect together. (Examples: Batman and Catwoman, Jin and Sun [LOST], Chuck and Blair [Gossip Girl], Cloud and Reno {i don’t otp them though they are just a good ship}, Hyde and Jackie [That 70’s show] {if you didn’t want them to end up together u r crzy}). So I already shipped Axel and Riku together for the sake of shipping them because they were pretty and my favorites.
Obviously that was a long time ago. And when I say a long time ago, I mean that was the end of my shipping AkuRiku as of a year ago. Theeennnn this picture came into my life:

And I started to get more into AkuRiku. I was writing more about them and shipping them more. Then my head canons started to develop. And it just progressed and it was like a slow decent into madness. At first everything I was writing for them was going to end in them breaking up - Riku going to be with Sora and Kairi, Axel going to be with Roxas. They were just friends with benefits and they were going to “break up” and part as friends. Then they basically started a relationship (I swear Axel and Riku were like being their own characters and just stole my words from me and started writing the story). Still, they were going to end breaking up and this was probably not going to be such a smooth break up. But they’d eventually become very good friends and always reflect on their relationship together fondly.
Buuuuut I just kept going and eventually they just… kinda.. fell in love?? And at first Riku was eventually going to end things - they’d always love each other but they loved Sora and Kairi and Roxas more right? WRONG. THEY JUST KEPT FUCKING GOING AND FALLING MORE IN LOVE.
And now that is their story in my head. This is all an AU situation. For me their relationship has just progressed and has gone so deep and they are just madly in love and it’s disgusting those fuckers. On my main blog I have a million and one of those imagineyourotp things reblogged with tags just FULL of AkuRiku situations. So you can go read those if you want. Some of them are actually really fucking cute.
If you guys would like to know a secret: I don’t really ship AkuRoku anymore. But that has very little to do with AkuRiku. During this past year I have gone from really disliking Xion to actually really liking her. And now I’m very much a Roxas/Xion shipper and… just… I’ve fallen out of love with AkuRoku. Don’t worry I still have headcanons for them, so you will definitely see them. plus AkuSai yes.

There is just… just JUST SO MUCH POTENTIAL FOR A GREAT ROMANCE BROMANCE. In all serious: They could seriously be fucking great friends. At first they aren’t going to like one another. I mean c’mon, Axel kidnapped Kairi and tried to turn Sora into a heartless. That won’t sit well with Riku. And I mean… look at what Riku did to Roxas. Yeah. BUT. Eventually they’re going to get past it. They are both Guardians of Light and they’ll be working together. They’re on the same side. LETS BE HONEST: THEY WOULD KICK SO MUCH ASS IN A FIGHT TOGETHER OH MY FUCKS. They would you can’t deny that. Ship or no ship, they’d kick so. much. ass. and then get each other’s ass I mean what?
I’ve been working on my story for them in-game. And what I’ve got so far is that Riku is helping train Axel and that’s how they start to become friends. And then they kinda… start to like each other. And thennnn a training session gets a little close and lingers a little too long. Oh and they’ve been sharing a room - with two beds - so they know that both of them have been having nightmares or not sleeping as of late. They’ve even climbed into bed with each other (platonically) just to be able to sleep and calm each other down. They’ve become pretty good friends at this point and they are trying to avoid having feelings for each other but OBVIOUSLY that’s not working very well. And I’m kind of torn on how they eventually reveal to each other that they kinda sorta maybe totally have feelings for the other. SO YEAH.
This was just a lot of information. I love talking about my boys.
Generally? Like with anyone? I have to do a general question? I can’t be specific about who he’s with? Oh god. Okay ummm….
Across the board… Riku obviously doesn’t talk about his feelings. He lets actions speak louder than words. Little things. Kisses in the morning, cuddles at night. sex He’s a bit insecure about relationships and tends to undersell himself. There could be someone out there for the other person that’s better than he is. Sometimes he lets it get to him but he tries to not make any decisions for the other person. If they want to be with him, who is he to say otherwise and deny them happiness that they could find with him?
He tends to avoid firsts. He doesn’t usually initiate the firsts, or at least tries not to. specifically he initiates the kiss with both Sora and Kairi first individually but in the OT3 he doesn’t initiate anything. Also Axel does most of the firsts. With the exception of proposals. He is usually the one to propose. even in the OT3 he says something like ‘How are all three of us going to get married?’ and Sora and Kairi are just so shocked that Riku is the one to ask. The only thing is, he never really plans the proposal. It just kind of happens. He just… asks. He never is prepared or has rings. Axel was planning on proposing but Riku beat him to it, but Axel had rings so it was kind of like a joint effort to propose to each other a lot like what they always do.
I have so many specifics. I’m so sorry. Asking me for general Riku head canons is so hard for me alksdfnaslkdfnalksdnfalk I HAVE SO MANY. I HAVE A RIKU HEAD CANON FOR EVERYTHING IMAGINABLE.
At first he doesn’t get it. Where’d the kid with the luscious locks go? But as he gets to know Riku (considering he didn’t really know Riku very well at this point) he understands the reasoning behind it. He sees this kid who really isn’t a kid anymore. Someone who - like himself - had his childhood sucked away by darkness and is actually so much more aged than his years.
rikuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu baby ugh. this poor kid he has such a hard life just let me hug him dammit.
I might add more to this later… But that’s about all I can think of right now.

And it’s completely by accident. It just kind of slipped out, like it was so natural to say. He knew his feelings before he said them, but he also knew that Riku probably wasn’t ready to hear it. But even still they were okay.

Character headcanon: Hm. Which one? I have so many. Um… I’ll just go with the first one I ever posted. Axel is an Aries. I’m going purely by the zodiac sign because I did some research on zodiacs a while ago and reading the Aries thing… It was (mostly anyway) Axel.

But when someone asks me about my Axel ships, Larxel is not on there… Does that make sense? Probably not. Also, I don’t really ship her with Marluxia. I just see them as friends who are evil together.

So I’ve been thinking about it…
The reason Riku’s reaction to Axel’s death was so strong was because there was no buffer between it and his grief, while when (let’s just say one) Sora dies, he’s got Kairi there grieving with him. He has Kairi to lean against and Kairi to need him back.
But if Axel died he’d have nothing. No one sharing in his grief. Sora and Kairi would be there of course, but it wouldn’t be the same. There would be no one that could come close to understanding what he was feeling. So the only buffer he has is the walls that Axel had to tear down. He rebuilds those and it’s that’s the way he copes. He finds the best way to shut down his feelings because there’s no one there to feel with him.
I dunno. I was just thinking about the whole thing. I really should stop thinking about it… but I dunno. I just have a lot of thinking time on my hands.
